DRIVER- CAR Security Systems and Tests

20 February 2015  11:52 PM

All racing cars must go through dynamic and static crash-tests always supervised by FORMULA 1®. Dynamic testing implies the movement of a device in the chassis testing. Static testing stands for force applying in a specific area without movement implied.

The main structures for the accident examination are installed in the spoiler and at the car rear.

Since 2007 racing cars have a LED system dashboard that shows the drivers all the waving flags indications.

HANS, has been one of the most important driver security devices over the last years in case of accident. This device is attached to a helmet and is supported by the shoulders, stopping the head from whipping forward in a crash, also holds the driver’s head and maintains the neck tension after a crash.

Tyres are the first to show the crash consequences, they usually fly out causing accidents to the commissioners, cars and drivers. In 2011 a two-anchorage system was implemented to minimize this risk.

The “Roll Cage” must resist a 2.4 tons weight and must be placed 70 millimeters over driver’s head.

Since 2011, FORMULA 1 ® implemented a new design of visor made of polycarbonate, reinforced with Zylon strip across the visor; still the uncovered cabin means a dangerous risk point for driver’s safety.

Safety during the competition not only depends on the racing cars, but also depends on the compliance of the security protocol on the speed limits; the safety-car, the car reestablishments, flags, etc…to reduce risks.
