THE STEERING WHEEL

07 March 2015  02:00 AM

The most important connection between the driver and the steering wheel is the steering system, as well as multiple electronic devices, it is essential to get communication between the technical team and the pits, to keep them aware of the car performance and the track conditions.

While driving at over 300km/h, the driver has got to listen to the team to adjust the car to the track conditions.

Lap times, revolutions, flags and some other basic parameters are shown on the digital screen. It has approximately 35 or more buttons and switches.

It might be thought that the main FORMULA 1 ® racing car control center is it engine, and not the steering Wheel, but the driver can fit tens parameters from the steering wheel.

Technical Regulations demand the facility for the driver to get out from the cabin in five seconds, for which the steering wheel must shut down quickly.

The cost of each FORMULA 1® steering wheel is estimated at 40.000 euros.

A fun fact about the FORMULA 1® steering wheel is that it has not a reverse button nor has a lever. It engages with the “N” button (neutral position) and pushing the shift lever down for over half a second.
