This Grand Prix doesn’t need introduction, it is the most famous given it is flagship of glamour and due to its broadcast. Leclerc, its main racer may place himself at the “Horns of the Moon”.
- It would be race number 982 in whole Formula 1 history.
- It’s the sixth race of the current season.
- And the 65th edition at the principality; which surprisingly didn’t host Grand Prix races from 1951 to 1954; however it hosted the race that officially launched this world category in motor racing.
- Those at the bottom of the chart positions and those who have slowed down the pace shall show a full recovery at Monte Carlo. As it is Williams’ case.
- It is also expected a clear recovery for Ferrari and Toro Rosso respectively, why? Because the stage conditions and their fortuitous races will surely make that something never done before, happens this time.
- Grove team could barely score four points in Azerbaijan- another Street test- so it is likely possible for them to win something in Monaco. Its Russian racer, Sergey Sirotkin has not been in the chart positions; he may do it in front of the royalty.
- Something similar is expected from the French racer, Romain Grosjean (with team Haas) who has not scored during the season. In his eight seasons of experience, he had never finished with empty hands. Amongst the 20 current racers, Romain has the longest streak without scoring: he reaches his ninth GP, since he began to miss the target right after Suzuka. It is clear that he has the car to achieve such recovery: if not now, when?
- For Brendon Hartley from New Zeland, on board Toro Rosso this is also a date on the calendar which could bring some serious consequences.
- He only got one point scored in Baku and had clearly left more than one opportunity goes away. It is well known that doktor Marko is terrible. After the test in Monaco, it would be easy for his team –based in Faenza- to kick him out he is in doubt whit them: it has been proved Honda’s unit power is competent, however, ever since the magnificent result got in Bahrain by Pierre Gasly, the team has not complied with expectations: they shall do things better next weekend.
- Team Force India has been asked to accomplish more than one pendant deed. They are in the seventh position of the standing, together with Haas, only for one point ahead; but McLaren (has 40 units) and Renault (41) it seems they let them slip away. This time it could and should happen that they finish this race with double score.
- Bad day for Esteban Ocon who had already collected one point, regular for Sergio Perez, who has added 15 units at least with a lavish podium in Azerbaijan.
- The Mexican already knows what is like, stepping the podium by making it between the three best in motor racing royalty. In Monaco, he finished in third place in 2016. It’s also worthy to mention, that last year as much as in 2012: he was the one setting the fastest laps record of the tests. Sergio Perez should sign a productive GP.
- From Carlos Sainz, the racer from Madrid, it is expected to make to the finish line, between the first six. He’ll race for four times on these streets. He scored during the three previous times: one point scored in 2015; four in 2016 and eight last year, this will be his sixth test with Reanult.
- As for the French team Sainz’s teammate, Nico Hulkenberg –born in Emmerich, Germany– he hasn’t been able to finish six of his twelve recent appearances (half of it) but in five of them, he finished between the top ten. The most serious matter is that he is still the racer with the biggest number of GP’s raced in the history without stepping a podium. If he doesn’t make it, this will become race 141 left waiting for it.
- Max Verstappen has not excelled in Monte Carlo. He crashed in 2015 and 2016, finishing in fifth place in 2017. He hasn’t finished between the top three, not a single time during races held at this venue, not even on one lap. He shall give a great performance next Sunday.
- In 2010, Red Bull won in Hungary thus reaching its 100th GP; by the time it had adjusted 150 races it result winner in Bahrain as well. They would be able to repeat the feat this time at its 250th GP but if it doesn’t, it’s very likely that it will exceed its number of podiums achieved: for it had reached its 150th advancement in Spain, fifteen days before.
- Daniel Ricciardo got only one pole position in Monaco, 2016 but has never won at this venue. In case of doing it, it would be the 33th varying racer in GP’s history, winning here.
- In order to succeed on such complicated streets at this princely city, it is mandatory to start from the pole. Something recently ignored by Ricciardo (in 2016) and also by Kimi Raikkonen (last year). None of them has achieved another pp ever since.
- He has lost the pole sitter only ten times out of the 64 GP in Monaco.
- To mention an example, in 1956, Juan Manuel Fangio on board a Ferrari he only managed to start but the victory back then was for another immortal: Stirling Moss on a Maserati. On the other hand, around 1985 the winner of the pole was Ayrton Senna but Alain Prost crowned himself as winner of the competition; in a painful and unforgettable experience.
- Coming from behind: Olivier Panís won, even having started from place 14th, then in 1996.
- Anyway, Kimi hasn’t won a single battle, since Australian GP in 2013. If he doesn’t make it next Sunday, he will tie in power negative record to Ricciardo Patrese, who stopped winning: since South African GP in 1983 until he won again in San Marino, 1990; for a total of 99 races between both GP’s.
- Raikkonen, has never repeated his triumph in Monaco, ever since he did it in 2005 season. In case of losing again, it would be 13 years without being a winner at this GP venue.
- From Finland, Valtteri Bottas has now 25 podiums accumulated in his seven seasons, but none of them gotten in Monaco. He has been second place in three out of the four most recent starts. But he hasn’t won yet in 2018. He could get it and step the podium for the first time in the principality; or only repeat and finish between the top three.
- For Sebastian Vettel, Monaco represents a great challenge, since he has the same number of victories accumulated than the tournament leader, two triumphs each. The German racer won the first two races in 2018, his opponent, the British, the last two. The gap between them in the charts is only of 17 units. In order to lead again Vettel, shall obtain this 17 points over him, which is almost impossible, unless…
- If Sebastian won, he would climb into his first 50 triumphs. A feat that has been only reached by: Alain Prost (who accumulated 51); his most ardent opponent, Lewis Hamilton (who has made it to the 64) and the record man of all times, Michael Schumacher (who set a high standard, with 91 won races).
- No matter what people say, if there is a favorite racer, that would be Lewis Hamilton. Because he knows exactly where to hit in order to make his most dangerous opponent, weaker. Last year he finished seventh, but he has the pending labor of getting his PP number 75 in his personal record. And he expects to raise his number of victories, from a privilege place; it would be the race number 42 (while M. Schumacher finished only with 40).
- For Mercedes this would be Hamilton’s 44th victory with the team, (same number at the back of the reigning monarch) well, he has only brought satisfaction as big as 2016’s to Monaco.
- Red flags, are not usually used at GP’s in Monaco.
- There are some exceptions, such as the one in 1984, when the test had to come to an end caused by the heavy rain (the winner of the test was Proust, having started at the end, while A. Senna was doing the performance of his life together with the modest Toleman-Hart). Other exception was the first turn for collision in 1990 between Gerhard Berger and Alain, at Mirabeau. Furthermore in 1995 also at the beginning of the race, just like it happened in 2000; or in 2011 when only 6 turns were missing. Also in 2013 which was supended in Lap 46, a 25-minute suspensión.
- Race in 2018 is expected to be a peaceful.
- To conclude, there is something interesting about the local racer.
- Charles Leclerc will be the third racer in Monaco, who will compete at his birthplace.
- Olivier Beretta in 1994 and Louis Chiron in1950 and 1955 have done it as well. Leclerc could score at this “his race” just like once Chiron did; for he finished in third position during his first appearance , and in sixth place on his second race (but only the first five could score, back then).
- However, the new racer born in Monaco is the only homegrown who has scored in two GP’s (the first one in Azerbaijan and in Spain afterwards. It would be a dominant matter if he achieved his third consecutive score next Sunday.
