FORMULA 1® TECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

03 June 2016  11:37 AM

As it if were an almost indisputable paradox technology and ecology are opposite poles most of the time. Technique forces to look for solutions subject to a moral law, more than to a physics rule: the law of the minimum effort. Technique turned into science, this means that technology: pursues above all to make human tasks easier.  ‘Give me a fulcrum and I will lift the world’, said Archimedes 200 years before Christ. And the idea of not moving the world but leaving it move alone is barely recent. For our concerns, we invented the wheel first, which was turning point in the human kind development and after that we learned to control fire. The car is through all that: wheels and combustion. Outgassing. Pollution. Only for a few it wouldn’t be clear that cars are something that planet could do without. Cars, now we know for sure: they are a calamity It is too late now to go back and do without the technological advances. Nobody would want to ride horses, donkeys or camels to go to work, to take their kids to school. And no one would think about going to Europe in a sailboat. The automotive industry has a major challenge that will not be solved playing tricks on the measurement of outgassing, but reducing them. And little by little, each activity will have to find other options without going reverse: finding advances without causing more damage and then recovering a more habitable world. Everyone must tie their belts, which by the way they began to be used in land transport, thanks to the FORMULA 1® since the end of the 1950s. Also the rear-view mirrors, the disc brakes, the smart suspensions, electronic transmissions, accelerators with no cables or metal lines. It may seem naive, but is not so. FORMULA 1® is not only the show and the racing cars business. It not only has to do with the broadcast of each of the tests. It also has its legal or legislative arm which is a demoniac refinement. There is an institution called the International Automobile Federation, which has more laws and regulations that any state constitution. The FIA has the purpose of regulating each and every part that concerns or affects FORMULA 1®. It has made campaigns for the cars to be driven all around the world, each time, with greater responsibility. It is true that it can’t make more than what UN makes about it. But they are going to give it all attempting to. This global and enforceable institution is working itself to improve the support and care for the environment. Despite jealousies and angers of an audience, who unwittingly search for even more impossible power and decibels. FIA has imposed guidelines and rules so the FORMULA 1® improves in the environment care. Hybrid power units, used today, are the result of the same. More friendly batteries which rescue the excess of air from the turbo motors; others, which maintain the energy from the braking and turn it into power, those are barely a few steps. In parallel an electric alternative that doesn’t quite fit has been developed, but everybody believes that’s the path to follow and the final goal. The paradox means precisely that audience wants more volume, more muscle excess. In other words, the FORMULA 1® will find the formula because it is an intelligent laboratory which sees for the future. The big problem of the environment neglect is a barbaric act of the human being, but ‘here we live’ and we better start collaborating with it and not just wait for the drivers and the cars to do it all by themselves. And that must concern us all. Mercedes Benz, Renault, FIAT, Ferrari, Chrysler and Honda among others less obvious: have to turn and see what their customers will ask for. For decades they asked for more cars. In America bigger cars. In Europe ‘more economizer’ and maneuverable cars. The audience will continue asking for more ‘intelligent’ cars and less pollutant. And that’s what they’ll have to do, because their mandate is to commercialize them. And to do it right: you have to fully satisfy the buyer. Irretrievably. By necessity they will have to turn and see FORMULA 1® to get inspired by it, since it is a show that reaches hundreds of millions of viewers several times a year. Producing pleasure and passion but also, attracting and generating a lot of information. Trends can be guessed by it lot before than by anyone else. Because F1 is a natural lab of research and development. There are dozens of the most finest scientists and technologists in the world earning enviable benefits, only by being solving ‘what comes’. New combinations of components and the search for materials which are unimaginable for this era. FORMULA 1® looks for stronger, lighter, easier to mold and ultimately more feasible. The iron, steel, aluminum and heavy metals, were giving place to carbon compounds. Effectively and Efficiency have been soughts. Elastomers, rubbers, unsual rubbers, neoprene, Kevlar, Teflon, ceramic, acrylic , dacron , tens of plastics unusual densities and countless new metals , based on elements from the periodic table that was previously not used as the titanium , cadmium , nickel . In addition alloys, almost unbelievable. The most advanced alchemy. That is why when cars crash, they don’t explode. The fuel load is placed in small kidneys in several parts of its configuration. This containers and ducts, are practically unbreakable and take have two or three layers thin as shirts but of an extreme hardness and flexibility that works as a shield; with gates and valves that looks like fantasy-science. But they are totally real and tested. Afterwards, they finish on the street cars that we use every day, including F1scientists and mechanicals. The summit test of the development and care of the environment that has developed the F1, can be witnessed in the capsule ‘the survival capsule’. Which is an invisible lattice that surrounds the driver by the four sides. So that when the car collisions, it falls apart, without the transmission of all the strength waves at one hit, so these diminish through their way to a human body. A terrible accident experienced by Fernando Alonso in his McLaren, in Australia this year, was mortal by necessity. The car broke up on a side of the track, a pile of smashed objects all over the place, from where the driver came out unhurt from the inside of the cabin. No, it was not a miracle. It was tested and checked that the car must do that when disintegrating. And passenger safety was the most important. Those same care will continue, because the ultimate spirit of FORMULA 1® , is not only ‘inspirational’ as it is called. It is pure and hard truth.
