1994 San Marino Grand Prix - Day 1.
The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, which was at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy, had a difficult beginning with an accident of one of the youngest drivers in that grid, Rubens Barrichello, during the free tests on Friday. The spectacular incident left a broken arm and a broken nose for the driver.
Day 2 - A fatal classification.
During the second day of activities, the headlines spoke about the struggle that would be disputed between Senna and Schumacher for the classification; that was stopped 40 minutes before the end, because Ronald Ratzenberger, who was running his third F1 race, had a fatal accident caused by a failure in the spoiler of his Simtek S94-Ford. Despite the unfortunate event, the Grand Prix would dispute the next day.
Another tragic day in Imola.
Ayrton Senna, who already had 10 years in FORMULA ONE, 161 races (started), 41 victories and 3 championships, was very shocked by the loss of the previous day, people could notice it, because of the expression on his face.
The Grand Prix of San Marino had a rough start. Benetton's car, driven by Jyrki Järvilehto, stood at the start and Pedro Lamy, who was driving a Lotus-Mugen-Honda car, hit him. Pieces of both cars went flying and the safety car went into the track.
Soon after, the race resumes with Schumacher and Senna on the top two positions. Everything was fine, until Ayrton Senna's car was in the Tamburello curve and suddenly it goes out of the track, over 200 km/h, crashing into the barriers. The red flag began to toss and medical car was to attend the Brazilian driver, who raced for Williams that season.
Senna was airlifted to a hospital in Bologna, where he was given the following cares. Forty minutes later, the race was restarted from the grid and won by Michael Schumacher with a Benetton-Ford car.
That was the first time a victory was not celebrated with champagne.
Just after 18:30 hrs., Ayrton Senna's death was announced, but the official death time was set at 14:17, time of impact. Officially, Senna, never recovered from the traumatic brain injury he suffered because of a piece of the car that pierced his helmet.
