GERMAN GP AVUS It is an abbreviation for: Automobil Verkehr und Übung Strass (Car traders and road users) was in the suburbs, in western Berlin. It was inaugurated on September 25th, 1921. It was a very simple design; on the two parallel road lanes, connected by a loop on one side and by a brick bench which was lifted 45° on the other side. It was extremely fast and interesting. But it was made for pure speed and to set mind-blowing records, on a base of 20 Km. It was only used for German Grand Prix in 1959, race which took place during the “Cold War” in that part of the world; for it allowed a lot of spectators in East German (communist) to attend a F1 race; when the fatal “Berlin Wall” was not built yet. Its goal by that time was purely political. NURBURG-RING It is placed in the foothills of Eifel Mountain close to Adenau 50km from Bonn, in Nurburg. Its predecessor was Nordschleife (North loop) considered too dangerous, since Niki Lauda’s accident when he was caught by fire. The Green Hell, such fatal event ended that venue. The new NurburgRing is a white pigeon compared to that. It is 4.5 Km and almost always in intense activity with all kind of races; such as 24-hour Nurburgring; is the GP alternative whenever they are not carried out in Hockenheim. And it is very used by German people. HOCKENHEIM-RING Placed next to Hockenheim, at 10 kilometers South from Heidelberg, just a little more than an hour from Frankfurt’s airport. Mercedes has used it as a track for tests. It was an endless straight across the forest, pretty narrow. After Jim Clark’s accident in 1968 and after Patrick Depailler’s in 1981 organizers were obliged to change it in order to reduce its speed. Over time, the long straight lines began to deteriorate: therefore the layout was drawn again in order to make it a lot shorter. More tiers were placed so the cars could pass by more frequently (45 times before and 66 now). The Circuit became reasonable and allows a more natural aerodynamics. More overtakes have been also aimed; even it remains being a real fast circuit. It is a problem, finding the right commitment for cars’setting: on one side, the straight line; on the other side the “stadium”, with its sequence of closed curves and bends. NUMBERS The importance of Germany in Formula 1, besides of its layouts and its races, it is enriched with a brilliant “School for Pilots”. It has registry of 62officially, but some of them have been great influencers. Since the 50’s in the 20th Century, thanks to Karl Kling, Hans Herrman or Hermann Lang and with Hans Stuck. Later, the visible admiration to Wolfgang von Trips and on the other hand, the feats performed by Rolf Stomeelen or Stefan Bellof. But as it is well understood, the entire insanity came along with Michael Schumacher, along with the unbelievable numbers it arose; some of them unlikely repeatable, seven-time world champion. And so, thanks to Sebastian Vettel’s feats the four-time world champion is still active. Winners
